Julian Scott Varner is currently a Director of Music in the NYC area. He has served as Pastor of the Music and Arts Ministry, and Chief Musician. His duties included him overseeing the spiritual care and development of the Music and Arts department. Born and raised in Harlem, NY he has been playing the piano for well over 40 years. A Church Musician and Minister of Music for some thirty plus years, his experiences include Associate Pastor @ Strait Gate church Mamaroneck, NY, over 10 years as an Assistant and later, Chief Musician at the Greater Refuge Temple Church, in Harlem, NY; Musician at St Lukes AME Church in Harlem, NY; Director of Music, Media, and Theatrical Arts at St Stephen Community AME Church in Harlem, NY; and Assistant Minister of Music at Salvation and Restoration COGIC in Brooklyn, NY.
Julian accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at the young age of 19, and received the gift of the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking in tongues under the travail of his Father, prayer warrior extraordinaire the late, Elder Kenneth Lee Varner, who served as an Assistant Pastor under the Leadership of Bishop William L. Bonner at Greater Refuge Temple in Harlem, NY. Julian answered the call to minister the word of God at the age of 21, and as a young minister later became Chairman of the Assistant Junior Pastors board at Greater Refuge Temple, and also served as President of the Youth Council. In 1990 God led him to become a part of the Strait Gate ministry where he became an integral component of the music ministry team and where he was ordained as an Elder in 1995.
Currently a Graduate of Nyack College in NY with a Degree in Sacred Music, he is also a graduate of the Center for the Media Arts, in Manhattan, where he studied Audio and Recording Engineering. Pastor Varner to his credit has made several recordings and has also been instrumental in bringing several artists to various record labels. In his Musical career, Julian has traveled to Brazil, Switzerland and many other places working with choirs directing and arranging musical projects. His experience spans a range of musical and arts genres, and as a Musical Director for an off-Broadway Stage Play entitled “When a Man Cries” Written and Produced by J.D. Lawrence, which featured the legendary Edwin Hawkins among other additionally noted artist.
Julian Varner is always working in the studio producing and arranging inspirational projects. His long-term goal is to provide an avenue for young artists, musicians, singers, songwriters, and producers to reach their full potential in the Music Industry. He can be found providing production services to independent and professional artists alike in his production studio, which is in Hillside NJ.
As an anointed and passionate psalmist, Pastor Varner continues to juxtapose his God given gifts and talents with the word of God ever demanding for himself an alignment of his skills with the goal of getting deeper and closer to God and his divine will for his life. Thus disturbed by the current state of the Gospel Music Industry, Varner is committed to exposing the subtleties of the enemy’s tactics in infiltrating the Gospel Music Genre. Through preaching and teaching on a variety of topics including The Purpose of Music in the Temple; The Biblical Approach to Worship and Praise; and The lifting of our Spiritual Awareness and Knowledge of Spiritual Warfare through the Vehicle of Music, he brings revelatory knowledge of the need to re-examine what this present generation has normalized in these last few years and last days.
